CHARACTERS: MEET THE MUNICHA’S
MORGANA:
Morgana is a weird bug. Her beauty is somewhat peculiar but most of all, she is over sensitive. She has always had trouble with her relationships. She calls herself a love-disabled. She grew up without a father figure and that’s why she gets along with men. She is constantly looking for their company and approval. She identifies with the rebels, the lunatics, the unpopular, repudiated and extravagant ones. According to her, Love doesn’t exist but the truth is she suffers from violent passionate crushes and is longing for someone she can admire and respect. Which is rarely the case by the way. She is fatalist, self-destructive and full of complexes even if she manages to show the opposite. Deep inside she is an artist but her auto-criticism doesn’t allow her to believe it. Morgana has an adventurer spirit not to say escapist. Her way to compensate her lack of credibility as a photographer is by making lots of money. For that she doesn’t have any scruples and she doesn’t hesitate putting at risk her reputation, her job, and even her own security. To fight off loneliness and evade reality, Morgana does drugs. Pushing the limits of discovery, sometimes she loses herself. She carries on a double life: the one she shows to her mother and the one she doesn’t. The acceptance of this one is sacred though. You are probably wondering why should people root for an anti-hero like her? Well, probably because people like dreamers. Morgana is talented and pretty tortured and people like to see tortured ones succeed. (They probably like even more to watch them earning it). Artists at heart are going to feel compelled by the theme of angst-ridden drive of the process of creativity. The loners are going to identify with the theme of the difficulty of finding the special one. The aviation trade is going to relate to everything that she goes through, and people who have nothing to do with aviation will never see the milieu the same again. Those who have lost a very dear one would see themselves reflected on Morgana’s grief. And finally fishes-out- of-water will hopefully embrace their uniqueness. And because...well, I've never seen a character like that so far!
DR. MUNICHA:
She is the catalyst of Morgana’s Master Piece photo series. Her function is to remind audiences that Morgana is a divorced-parent child, raised by a particularly strong single mother. Dr. Municha is the completely reverse of Morgana: reserved, cultured, anti-conflict, generous and most of all, responsible. The Mother stresses Morgana’s interior conflict between following her appetite for forbidden things and not defrauding her. Audiences will understand that Morgana feels the need to behave the opposite way of the Mother out of rebelliousness, pain and resentment. In fact, Morgana acts out because she can’t stand to reproduce the schema that made suffer the person she cares the most about. Morgana keeps lots of secrets to not to hurt her, and the mother tries not to be too invasive in her daughter’s life, because she trusts her. When the caring loving mother is murdered, the house pillar falls down and so do all the dreams we anticipated with her. Dr. Municha’s picture of happiness is retiring soon, seeing her daughters professionally accomplished and spent the rest of life reading and playing piano. She would love to avoid Morgana the artist’s unstable way of life, and that’s why she lives under the constant dilemma between encouraging her and trying to convince her otherwise. Her arch will lie on understanding how atypical her daughters are, accept them and ultimately support them.
EMILIA:
Emilia is the fresh air of the story. She is the intellectual Kitchen rat and her dream is to study pastry in Paris. She works at a French cake-chocolate shop and speaks French. Emilia is constantly at odds with Morgana, always questioning and criticizing her even if we soon discover that she is less strong and way much more vulnerable. She has a big scar on her left cheek, which causes her a huge inferiority complex. She got that scar by trying to protect her little sister Morgana of being burned by boiling water when they were small. She cooks wonderfully, in fact, that’s her passion. She doesn’t go out very often because she doesn’t like to be stared at. She is really shy and that’s why she communicates through her dishes. She is a walking daydreamer. Her Romanesque fantasies are brought alive in a realm of “magic realism” transforming the boring quotidianity that surrounds her. In her little world, she often goes from anti-hero to all mighty. Emilia is always taking care of her Mother as well as of the household since Morgana is never in. Growing up with a beautiful self-sufficient sister who never lacked of pretenders was not easy for her. In fact most of the time she runs out of arguments in front of her reckless and tyrannical sister. Nevertheless, Emilia is noble at heart and she is the one who helps building the photo exhibition for Morgana, the one who takes care of the funeral and legal matters, and the one that will help Morgana dealing with the French people when her photo series is awarded in Paris. The biggest trauma of her life is going to be that her mother dies in her arms after being brutally assaulted. Her biggest achievement is going to be traveling to Paris and actually study gastronomy at the Cordon Bleu.
MEET MORGANA’S ENTOURAGE
IVANA:
Ivana could easily represent what Morgana would become if she were conformist. Her character is a vehicle to expose what Morgana thinks about men. Ivana was a bomb but since she had her child, she kind of let herself go and works only by obligation. If she had the choice, she would rather work in an art Gallery or as a painter. Ivana represents the modern woman, self-sufficient and completely disenchanted by men. She became really practical; she got tired of being abused so she turned into the abuser. She has a lot of charisma, brains and intellectual interests way above the average of people that surround her. That’s why she is not a victim of social or religious taboos. Her goal is very clear. Ivana wants to save enough money to open a little restaurant in Playa del Carmen and exhibit paintings from emerging artists. Her alternative way of making money isn’t what we could call virtuous, but as she would say, virtue doesn’t feed. The quicker she can make that kind of money, the fastest she can quit aviation and raise her child on a far and peaceful beach. Her plan is to retire at 40 and reinvent herself.
JACARANDA:
Playful and humorous, Jacaranda takes care of Morgana. He cleans her reputation and is there to shut up dirty mouths. He is a veteran about to retire. He has seen, heard and lived everything. He would like to protect Morgana but he knows it’s not his duty. He is somewhat amused by Morgana’s way of life but knows what awaits her if she keeps on the same path. That’s why he supports her endeavor in becoming a photographer. Contrary to Ivana and Morgana, Jacaranda really wanted to be a flight attendant and is satisfied with his job. He has made good real estate investments and the only thing he is missing is a partner with whom he can share and travel. He loves good restaurants and travels. That’s why he sends “sushi” to Morgana. His goal is to marry a guy that wants children. His paternalist vein is very obvious but Morgana awakes the crazy fearless in him. He’s got a lot of sex- appeal and Morgana is well placed to know that he is not the kind to beat about the bush. That’s why he sends her Kikujiro (with his sushi-room- service all included) when he abandons her at that gay bar. Thanks to his negotiations with Olimpia, he gets back Morgana’s lost portfolio and puts together a surprise “goodbye” exhibit.
KIKUJIRO:
Kikujiro was there at the right moment in the right place. He got to see Morgana’s sensual and creative explosion. Kikujiro is the exotic touch of the story. Morgana is fascinated by his traits and it’s the first time she feels sexual attraction for an Asian guy. Since she was already turned on by watching the guys at the gay-club, and she had already a couple of drinks, she can not resist the temptation of seducing him. Kikujiro comes from a fisherman family back in his natal Korea. But somehow he is fascinated by Pre-Hispanic cultures. He is timid and Morgana knows it, that’s why she enjoys putting him on a tight spot. Without wanting, he says something that insults her and so she throws him out. Kikujiro’s goal is to learn Spanish well enough to get a degree on Pre-Hispanic cultures. He likes Mexico very much but he feels very lonely and isolated because of the language and culture barriers.
QUIROGA:
Quiroga helps Morgana with her most difficult homework. He initiates her into a dimension that he tries not to visit himself: the decadence due to loneliness. There is a lot of sexual tension between them, especially because of the situation that surrounds them. Their attraction is forbidden since he is married, that’s why she respects him and he contains himself. Quiroga says that one have to be careful with reputation at work, although if he weren’t married, everything he extols would go straight to hell. This is a contradictory character since he seems really serious, but behind that solemnity hides a volcano abut to burst. He is kind of tired of so much boredom and quotidianity. Morgana reminds him that women can be fascinating when they are not the typical housewives. Should he have met her years back, he would have fallen deeply for her. Now he is tied and drowned. Drowned but still not wet. Maybe that’s why he is so enthralled by that strange bug of Morgana. This character is there to introduce the old famous trick of the Mile High Club. To be or not to be a member of the club. That’s is his question.
BASCAL:
Bascal is Morgana’s old twin soul. He is irreverent, nonconformist, transgresses all the rules and is thirsty for adventure. That’s why he enjoys Morgana’s company. He likes being with someone who genuinely enjoys the pleasure of a nice table, a nice glass of wine, a nice sunset, art in all its forms, someone who’s got the “savoir vivre”, the culture and the sensibility it takes. Someone with whom he can laugh and make fun of what society might think. This man really misses to laugh. That’s why he loves to make Morgana discover new things but he doesn’t try to seduce her. His secret flame is benign as we discover in the car scene. This guy would have loved to marry a delirious screw-loose that would enjoy the crazy things he likes to do; someone with whom he could share the emporium he has build in Cuernavaca. Emporium that, in the lack of a queen, he filled with dogs. Wow. What a waste.
FRANCK:
Franck is the artist spirit, indomitable, free and passionate. He represents the discipline and the tenacity of the artist vowed to his vocation. He represents everything that Morgana would like to become, and even better, everything that she looks for in a man. She profoundly admires him, and he brings out the best in her. When he doesn’t call her after her spectacular show in Vegas, she feels miserable. She thinks she’s not worthy and that her illusions are hopeless. Franck is there to show that Morgana does have feelings, does build hopes in spite of always telling that Love is a myth. Franck does not attend the goodbye-exhibition at the airport but he does discover the pictures through Internet. At the beginning their love is platonic and from the distance, made of calls and e-mails. His motto is: “You give up your dream, you die”.
MARCO:
He is the mentor. He is a good teacher since he adapts the homework according to his student’s competences. He is very straightforward and that’s why he hurts susceptibilities. He feels a lot of affection for Morgana, after all, is very rare to find a student that brings such original pictures. His function is to take the lid off Morgana, make her step out of her comfort zone and attack the themes he thinks are the most valuable to exploit her potential. That’s why he brings to her the cuttings of the contests, that’s why he cares, that’s why he holds her. He’s got a crush on her and his way to defend himself from that impossible love is by being even harder with her. He is eccentric and dramatic. His golden dream is getting more commercial photo contracts but mostly, selling his masterpieces in galleries around the world. Becoming a real photographer, not only a teacher in the matter.
